The first event for the UFC in 2016 continues to take shape with excellent star power. UFC.com announced Monday the return of Michael “Mayday” McDonald who took a two year hiatus away from mixed martial arts competition due to a litany of injuries. He will make his return at UFC 195 against Masanori Kanehara.
McDonald (16-3, 5-2 in UFC) hasn’t fought since his submission loss to Urijah Faber at UFC on Fox 9 in December of 2013. Even with the long layoff, he is still ranked at No. 8 in the UFC rankings. McDonald’s long lay-off is attributed to multiple injuries to his hand, as well as debilitating ones to his wrist. McDonald holds victories against the likes of Miguel Torres, Brad Pickett, and chris Cariaso while his only losses in 5 years are only to Urijah Faber and former UFC Bantamweight champion Renan Barao. Despite his long absence, McDonald is still very young in his career at the age of only 24.
Kanehara (25-12-5, 1-1 in the UFC) will be looking to bounce back from a split decision loss back in July against Rani Yahya at UFC Fight Night 71: Mir vs. Duffee. Prior to that, the Japanese bantamweight made a successful debut, winning a unanimous decision victory against TUF veteran Alex Caceres. Masanori Kanehara is very experienced having fought for multiple promotions in Japan such as Pancrase, Deep, World Victory Road, Dynamite, and Sengoku FC. Before making the drop to bantamweight, Kanehara was a successful featherweight, winning the Sengoku Featherweight Grand Prix and capturing the Sengoku FC featherweight championship. Since making the drop to bantamweight, Kanahara is 7-2 with six finishes.
UFC 195 will be headlined by a spectacular championship fight as UFC Welterweight king “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler defends his title against the former Interim champion Carlos “The Natural Born Killer” Condit. The event takes place on January 2nd at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV. The rest of the card can be seen below and be sure to check out the MMAOutsiders.com current rankings:
