The UFC is headed back to Steel City for another Fight Night installment in 2016. The Pittsburgh Post Gazette announced the event Thursday and is set to take place on February 21st. UFC senior vice president Dave Sholler confirmed the news to MMAFighting on Titter.
Only one bout has been announced for the event, and will be a middleweight match-up between Derek Brunson and Roan “Jucao” Carneiro. Brunson (14-3, 5-2 in UFC) is riding the biggest wave of his career coming into this fight with a 3-fight winning streak and also ranked at No. 14 in the UFC’s media-generated rankings. His latest victories include a dominating judges decision victory over Lorenz Larkin, and two destructive knockouts over veteran Ed Herman, and former TUF competitor “Smile’N” Sam Alvey.
Carneiro (20-9, 3-3 in UFC), is looking to build off of the momentum he garnered earlier this year after a spectacular career resurgence in submitting Mark “The Phillipino Wrecking Machine” Munoz. Carneiro competed in the UFC several years ago and earned his way back into the big promotion after going 7-1 upon his departure. Carneiro was recently scheduled to face Gegard “Dreamcatcher” Mousasi at UFC Fight Night 75 in Japan but pulled out of the bout due to an elbow injury.
UFC Fight Night 82 has yet to announce any other bouts or a headliner but stay tuned for more news on that as it comes. The first and last time the UFC came to Pittsburgh, the card was headlined by Pat Barry and Cheick Kongo in one of the most incredible Heavyweight fights ever witnessed. UFC Fight Night: Pittsburgh will be held at the Consol Energy Center, and will air on Fox Sports 1 per the initial reports.
