Alistair Overeem to test free agency after this Saturday

This Saturday, on UFC on Fox 17, Alistair Overeem will face former UFC Heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos in one of the most anticipated heavyweight match-ups of the year. But no matter the outcome in this weekends titanic bout, Alistair Overeem’s future with Ultimate Fighting Championship will be left up in the air.

Alistair Overeem is one of the most decorated Heavyweights of his time. Throughout his distinguished career, Alistair has almost seen it all. Competing in organizations over the world in back, as well as winning championships in organizations such as the K-1 Kickboxing, DREAM, and Strikeforce Heavyweight titles. Beating legends in both Pride and the UFC. First thing is first,as he must face one of the biggest challenges in long career against Junior Dos Santos in the nights co-main event.

But what happens after? Well, that’s just the thing. Who knows?

Reported by Ariel Helwani Wednesday night on UFC Tonight, Saturdays bout with the Brazilian heavyweight will be the last on Overeem’s contract. Also reported was that Overeem planned on testing the open market and establishing his value afterwards. Many other fighters this year alone have recently opted to test the free agency, mostly in efforts to maximize or establish better value for themselves. Aljamain Sterling and Benson Henderson are currently in negotiating periods. Fighters who have tested the free market and left the UFC include Phil Davis, Josh Thomson, and Josh Koscheck. Others who have tested the market and stayed with the UFC include Gilbert Melendez, Chris Weidman, and Anderson Silva who all were awarded more prestigious contracts after doing so.

Overeem has yet to comment on what his preference is, or where he’d like to end up after Saturday. But should Overeem earn a victory over the former heavyweight champion, Overeem will certainly have a lot of bargaining chips to play on where he would like to go himsel, as well as how much.
