There has been some tension in the past between Holly Holm’s training camp at Jackson-Winkeljohn in Albuquerque, NM and the UFC about how long the new Women’s Bantamweight Champion would have to wait to fight again. Originally, it was planned that Holm would have to wait until UFC 200 in July to defend her belt against the former champion Ronda Rousey, who Holm knocked out in the second round last November at UFC 193 to win the title. But Holm has stated in the past she would like to fight again sooner than that. Her management team has been putting pressure to defend her title sooner than that. It was also not known Rousey will return due to injuries sustained in her fight against Holm
UFC President Dana White made a breaking announcement on UFC Tonight on Wednesday.”Holly Holm will fight before she fights Ronda,” White said. While it sounded a like immediate rematch was imminent, it looks like White and the UFC finally caved into Holm’s requests. Holm also signed a new multi-fight contract with the UFC with a 3-0 record in the UFC. It’s not known who she will fight first, but former Strikeforce Champion and #2 contender Miesha Tate is the most likely choice.
On the question of whether Rousey will return to fight again, White also addressed that on UFC Tonight. “You will see Ronda Rousey fight again,” White said. “Ronda has dedicated the last three-plus years to working hard here. Not just fighting, but promoting and taking the sport and the UFC to a whole other level. Ronda has some well-deserved time off but she will fight this year.”
