Bleacher Report has broken that the UFC will soon make the announcement that the UFC Featherweight Champion “The Notorious” Conor McGregor will step up for theLightweight Championship against Rafael dos Anjos . In addition, the Women’s Bantamweight Champion Holly Holm will face agains #2 contender Miesha Tate for the main events of UFC 197 on March 5th in Las Vegas, Nevada. Conflicting reports that the even will be held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena or the Mandalay Bay Events Center
Since all fighters tend to be popular with fans (especially Holm and McGregor), this should be perhaps the prestigious card since UFC 194. The decision seemingly been made to have McGregor challenge for a second title instead of defending his Featherweight title against Frankie Edgar, who was promised another title shot after he knocked out former contender Chad Mendes at the TUF 22 finale .
While the UFC was previously letting a fighter fight for two different divisions, White reconsidered after McGregored constantly put pressure on the UFC for the new change. This will mark the first time a fighter fought for two UFC belts simultaneously. This feat has been done before in boxing, such as when Henry Armstrong held three different title belts (Bantamweight/Lightweight/Welterweight) at the same time in the 1930s. Maybe McGregor hopes to follow in Armstrong’s footsteps.
