In the WSOF 28 co-main event bout between the promotions top Bantamweight contenders in Timur Valiev (10-2) and Chris Gutierrez (9-1-1), controversy was afoot as the judges awarded Gutierrez the split decision victory despite the fanfare and media consensus nearly unanimously deciding that Valiev was the true victor in a fast paced bout that saw Valiev press forward aggressively for the majority of the fight.
Round one was tentative for both men as neither man was too committed to pressing forward. That all changed after a series of successful leg and body kicks landed by Valiev seemingly kept Gutierrez at bay.
In the second round Valiev seemingly turned it up a notch in a closely contested round that did see Valiev land multiple takedowns. In round 3, Gutierrez landed perhaps the most significant strike of the bout, a left hand that dropped Valiev to the canvas and possibly sealing Gutierrez the round.
