“The Crippler” will no longer be making a return to the cage as expected.
After checking with doctors in hopes of soon competing for Bellator, Leben discovered he is actually now suffering from a medical condition that is allowing only 18% of normal blood to flow into his heart.
MMAJunkie confimred the story after being notified from Leben’s management soon after MMANytt broke the news.
Chris Leben signed with Bellator last month, announcing his intent to end his retirement and compete once again in mixed martial arts. The news came from a physical Leben underwent in order to be cleared for a return for sometime in the Spring. However, he failed several electrocardiogram (EKG) tests according to the statement sent to MMAJunkie. Leben has since been prescribed a number of life-saving drugs that will likely save him from “a catastrophic cardiac event.”
Bellator President Scott Coker made a short statement following the news and said, “We are saddened to hear of Chris Leben’s current health situation and would have loved to see him compete inside the Bellator cage.
“A fighter’s health and safety is of the utmost importance to us as an organization. We wish Chris the best in his future endeavors and we are happy to provide a platform for him to share his story with people around the world.”
