When it is today of all days, it’s hard to believe most, if not all, insane news that you see when it comes to MMA. Which makes delivering this specific sort of news confusing. Multiple sites have been siting BJPenn.com for “breaking” the news after the site stated that a close source informed them that Cormier would be unable to make it to UFC 197. Many multiple sites such as MMAMania and MMAFighting are choosing to believe BJPenn.com and have run the story.
This writer is certainly remaining wary and will be looking for more legitimate evidence, at least until it is no longer April 1st.
However, if it does prove to be true that the current Light Heavyweight champion is in fact injured and unable to compete at UFC 197, top Light Heavyweight and former title challenger Anthony “Rumble” Johnson has already stated that he would be willing and ready to step in on short notice and compete at UFC 197. Making the possibility of an interim Light Heavyweight championship fight the next likely option if the UFC wishes to keep Jon Jones on this card.
