The Lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos will make his return to defend his title for the second time against the former Bellator Lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez.
The UFC announced Friday morning the match-up, and also included the interesting fact that it will be featured during International Fight Week on July 7th which lands on a Thursday. The final kicker? It will be featured exclusively on UFC Fight Pass.
Dos Anjos (25-7, 14-5 in UFC) is coming off a dominant first round TKO of Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone back in December. He was scheduled to defend his title earlier this year in March against UFC Featherweight champion Conor McGregor but was forced to pull out of the bout due to a foot injury. Dos Anjos is currently riding a five-fight winning streak, earning stoppages in three of those bouts.
Eddie Alvarez (27-4, 2-1 in UFC) may have gotten off to a rocky start in the UFC after dropping a judges decision to Donald Cerrone in his promotional debut, but Alvarez has since put that hiccup far behind him after defeating former Strikeforce champion Gilbert Melendez last June, and following that up with a victory over the former UFC champion Anthony Pettis. Alvarez himself is a former Bellator Lightweight champion and defeated the likes of Roger Huerta, Shinya Aoki, Patrickey “Pitbull” Freire and Michael Chandler during his reign.
This UFC Fight Night has yet to correctly numbered nor have any other bouts for the card been announced as of yet. The event will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV.
