UFC 206 Review

UFC 206 took some hits when the main event between light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier and top contender Anthony Johnson was pulled from the card. Rashad Evans was also pulled from the card. With recent cards being so stacked this card flew under the radar a bit, but man did it deliver.

Max Holloway VS Anthony Pettis

Pettis had little to no success, Max took the fight right to him and eventually got the finish at the end of the 3rd round. Nailing him with some body shots, dropping Pettis and finishing the fight. This was the 10th win in a row for Max Holloway, earning him the interim featherweight title. Anthony Pettis says he broke his hand in the first round, Pettis said making the weight cut to 145 is to hard and that he will be going back to 155. Max Holloway is looking to set up a fight with current featherweight champion, Jose Aldo

Donald Cerrone VS Matt Brown

This was a good back and forth fight, it seemed to be a very close fight up until the finish. Through out the fight Donald landed several head kicks on Matt, utilaizing the lead leg. Matt landed a good punch and dropped Cerrone and the momentum seemed to be going Matt’s way. Then the finish came, Matt ate another head kick in the third round, this one knocked him out.

Another great fight, anyone who decided that this pay per view wasn’t worth buying, was very wrong. Donald has expressed interest in fight Damian Mia. Hard to say what’s next for Matt Brown, he was the 14th ranked welterweight and this being his 3rd loss in a row, he may drop out of the top 15.

Cub Swanson VS Doo Ho Choi

Wow what can you say about this one. Swanson VS Choi gets my vote for fight of the year. These two went to war. Both men were literally on the verge of being knocked out several times. In the end Swanson was just to much and ended the third round with a series of strikes to take the round and the fight. Choi may have lost but his stock went way up, he will become a fan favorite and a big sell with wars like that.

Kelvin Gastelum VS Tim Kennedy

Gastelum was forced to take a fight at 185 pounds after several failed weight cuts. The fight started out with Kennedy looking to grapple, he got Kelvin on the cage, had him in a body lock, the first 3 minutes of round one took place there, with Tim landing knees to the legs of Kelvin. After that it was all Kelvin, his boxing was clearly on another level. He put a hurting on Tim Kennedy and eventually got the finish in the third round. Tim took this fight after a 2 year absence from fighting.

Emil Meek VS Jordan Mein

Jordan Mein probably took the first round, Meek seemed to of injured his rib. Got a take down in the 2nd round, held Jordan Mein down for most of the round with little effort from Mein to get back to his feet, Meek cruised to an easy decesion using his grappling.

The following fighters were awarded $50,000 bonuses:
Fight of the night award: Went to Cub Swanson VS Doo Ho Choi
Performance of the night: Went to Max Holloway and Lando Vannata
