The Outsiders Top 5 Fights of 2016

As the year comes to an end, here is The Outsiders top 5 fights of 2016. We seen many great wars over the course of this year, only the best made this list, and here they are.

1. Doo Ho Choi VS Cub Swanson.

Man what an epic war this fight was, I knew coming into the fight it was going to be a good one. Swanson lost to Max Holloway and Frankie Edgar, before racking up 2 wins in a row coming into this fight. He was matched up with a guy like Choi who likes to bang and go for the knock out. UFC 206 flew under the radar a bit compared to other cards but it turned out to be one of the best cards of 2016. This was a back and forth fight where one guy would hurt the other and go for the kill only to get countered and hurt. A real slugfest where I don’t believe there was a loser. Both guys earned a ton of fans and respect after this one. Swanson came away with the 3 round decision.

2. Carlos Condit VS Robbie Lawler.

This was a great fight, not to mention it was for the welterweight championship. Condit came on strong in the early rounds but Lawler sealed the deal in the final 2 two rounds. Had Condit hurt in that 5th round and was going for the finish. This is one of those fights that you could truly watch again and again. Lawler came away with the 5 round decision. A lot of people felt that Carlos Condit won this fight, but like they say, never leave it in the hands of the judges.

3. Nate Diaz VS Conor McGregor.

This fight had a lot of build up. Diaz came away with the submission finish in their first fight and momentarily put a stop to the Conor McGregor hype train. You see a lot of times the build up and promoting of a fight or Pay Per View card ends up being better than the fight. Well not this one, The build up was awesome. We had water bottle fights, awesome trash talk and oh yeah, a fight of the year contender. Conor dropped Diaz 3 times in 2 rounds but the hungry and determined Diaz would not go away and took the later rounds. We saw Conor come away with the 5 round decision and we will no doubt see these men fight for a 3rd time.

4. Stephan Thompson VS Tyron Woodly.

This fight right here was for the welterweight championship. Woodly and Thompson both came in with a ton of momentum. Woodly had just knocked out the reigning welterweight king Robbie Lawler in the first round. Stephen Thompson beat number 1 contender Rory MacDonald and this set up for a great fight. The fight ended up being a draw but that’s ok, the fans really won in this one. How Stephen Thompson survived this fight I’ll never know. Sure he won 3 out of 5 rounds but Woodly won two 10-8 rounds making it a draw. He had Wonderboy hurt bad with strikes , dropped him. Had him in a guillotine choke that 99% of people would have tapped to. Woodly is looking for other fights but who wouldn’t want to see these two men throw down again?

5. Alistair Overeem VS Stipe Miocic.

Stipe Miocic knocked out Fabricio Werdum in the first round and got to come home to Cleveland Ohio to defend his title in front of his hometown fans. After the fight, I’ll never forget hearing Stipe chant O-H and the crowd finishing with I-O. During the fight we seen Overeem hit Stipe and send him to the floor and then lock on a tight choke. Stipe survived got back to his feet and eventually got the KO with 33 seconds left in the first round. That’s heavyweights for ya, it can end at anytime. Instant classic.
